‘The G Word’: Obamas to produce new Netflix comedy series
Barack and Michelle Obama will produce the series, which will be based on the chaotic transition period that took place after Donald Trump became the American president in 2016.
FILMING OF ‘THE G WORD’ TO START EARLY 2021
Filming is set to start in early 2021, and the series will be based on Michael Lewis’s book The Fifth Risk, the rights to which the Obamas bought in 2018. Previous books by Lewis which were adapted for the screen include Moneyball and The Big Short, both critically acclaimed.
The Obamas, through their multimillion-dollar deal with Netflix and their company High Ground Productions, will bring The G Word to the streaming service.
“The G Word is set to be part documentary, part sketch comedy. It will pull back the curtain on government, examining whether it is a dirty word or a trusted institution,” according to Deadline.com.
ADAM CONOVER TO HOST THE SHOW
Comedian Adam Conover tweeted that he would be creating the new comedy series for Netflix and told his fans: “I can’t wait to share it with you.”
OTHER PROJECTS BY THE OBAMAS
The Obamas’ first project with Netflix was 2019’s American Factory, a documentary about a Chinese billionaire opening a factory in post-industrial Ohio. It tells the story of how early hope and optimism give way to setbacks as high-tech China clashes with working-class America.
The first volume of Barack Obama’s memoirs, A Promised Land, was released on 17 November and covers the period leading up to the May 2011 killing of Osama bin Laden. Michele Obama’s 2018 autobiography, Becoming, was also made into a Netflix documentary.
